If you are able to provide them something worthwhile for free, the clients will understand that you mean business and that your product that they pay for, will be worth much more.

The opt in page where the e mail is entered by the client should have catchy phrases and the content on it should also be interesting. This will add more clients and you will have a big list. This kind of list building is worth much more than a list that is purchased from various list providers.
